In celebration of February being recognized as Inclusive Education Month, we'd like to introduce you to last year's Inclusive Education Award winners.
Jack MacKenzie Elementary School (located in the southeast of Regina, Saskatchewan) was nominated by Heather Brownell, whose son Nathan attended there for nine years. Heather had this to say:
“Jack Mackenzie's teachers have always included Nathan in all classroom activities and field trips. Sometimes he requires a different approach to lessons including visual reminders, written instructions, and repetition. However, we believe that these adaptations can benefit all children, and the teachers are often willing to adjust their classroom activities to accommodate Nathan’s needs. The teachers are aware of situations that may aggravate our child. If the learning environment is too stimulating or noisy, Nathan is allowed to leave the classroom and work in a prep room or in the hallway. He does not have to wait to ask permission; he has been empowered to know what environment works best for him.”
Also impressed by the school’s embrace of inclusion was a Psychologist with the Autism Centre, who worked with staff. “Nathan’s school team were quite willing to spend a number of hours with me working together on a plan to help him feel more comfortable and be successful at school," said the Psychologist. "Their openness to new ideas and willingness to invest their time, including lunch hours, helped a great deal and facilitated true inclusion for Nathan at Jack MacKenzie.”
Nathan’s Grade Eight teacher, Mr. Kyle Dumont, accepted the award for the 2017 Inclusive School of the Year on behalf of Jack MacKenzie School.
